Born in Tehran, Amir Abbas Aboutalebi completed his M.S. in Architecture at Islamic Azad University, Tehran Branch. After working at Bahram Shirdel & Associates, he gained international professional experience in architectural offices in Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, and Kuwait. Following a meeting with Ken Yeang, he returned to Iran and founded AA Design Atelier, establishing a research-driven practice with an interdisciplinary approach that integrates cultural, perceptual, health-related, and ethical perspectives into context-sensitive, human-centered design. His work has been featured in peer-reviewed professional and academic journals and exhibited in international forums.
Aboutalebi has continued to test the boundaries of architectural design through a series of research-based competition proposals and built prototypes.
In 2015, he founded International Villa Magazine, a global platform dedicated to contemporary architectural discourse. Through this initiative, he has collaborated with European embassies, architectural offices, organizations, and universities, contributing to international dialogue on contemporary architecture. As editor-in-chief, he has led the publication of ten special monograph issues, each dedicated to a specific country, collaborating with more than 400 architectural offices worldwide and conducting over 100 exclusive interviews with internationally recognized architects.
Alongside his professional and editorial work, he has been actively engaged in teaching and independent academic initiatives in Iran. Since 2020, he has served as Dean of the Villa Academy, contributing to alternative and forward-thinking models of architectural education. Alongside his architectural career, he has maintained a sustained engagement with music and painting, disciplines that inform his broader creative outlook. He has performed works by The Beatles as a pianist and vocalist, and has authored an introductory guide to learning the tremolo harmonica.
